Malatestiana Fortress or Castle of the Rock
The monumental complex of the Malatesta Fortress was built between the 12th and the 16th century situated in a large area on the highest point of the "rock" of Verucchio, from where you can admire a beautiful panorama.
By the end of the 12th century the fortress already belonged to the Malatesta Family. Here, "Mastin Vecchio" Malatesta from Verucchio was born, the great leader Guelf who conquered Rimini in 1295 and founded the Signoria Omonima. The remains of the thirteenth-century fortress with ancient tower can still be admired inside the 15th century structure with the result of intervention of Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta in 1449.
Inside you can visit the rooms with original and interesting productions, the impressive Sala Magna the main hall, (since the eighteenth century was the city’s theater, however destroyed during the last world war), you can also get into the secret chambers dungeons, or climb up to the top of the mastio (keep the strongest and securest part of a castle) from which you can admire a great view. The fortress is one of the best-preserved representative examples of medieval architecture, that can still be still seen today in its entirety.
